Utah Sentencing Commission Approves of Change to Porn Laws.

The Utah Sentencing Commission voted yesterday to endorse a proposal to change the state's pornography distribution laws. This comes as a result of several Davis County teens sending nude pictures to each other on their cell phones. Currently, the laws mandate a felony charge for such behavior."What they were doing was either charging them with a felony or charging them with something else unrelated and making a deal with the defense attorney. It was very difficult to do," says Paul Boyden, Executive Director of the Statewide Association of Prosecutors.Boyden wrote the proposed changes, which include making it a Class A misdemeanor for a 16 or 17 year old to distribute pornographic material or deal in material harmful to a minor. Those same offenses would become a Class B misdemeanor for anyone under 16 years old. Boyden told the commission there is a clear need for the changes.

'Girls Gone Wild' worker pleads not guilty.

Prosecutors say a "Girls Gone Wild" employee has pleaded not guilty to sexually attacking a woman aboard a bus outside a New York bar. Thirty-seven-year-old Matthew O'Sullivan of Los Angeles was arraigned Wednesday and ordered held on $100,000 cash bail. He does not yet have a lawyer. A 20-year-old woman told police she was invited onto a "Girls Gone Wild" bus after an event held by the company Tuesday night on Long Island. She says she was forcibly groped and subjected to unwanted sexual contact. Police say O'Sullivan works for the company that makes the soft-core porn series. A call to the company's offices in Los Angeles seeking comment was not immediately returned.

Link O'Rama Adds Trusted Submitter Status

Though seemingly a small change, it may well be that Greenguy has once again changed the nature of traffic on the adult web. When it comes to link lists, GG's Link O'Rama is one of the very few 800-pound gorillas in the room; that well-earned reputation comes from, among other things, being both one of the earliest and most popular link lists around as well as to this day one of the largest traffic senders in the industry. In a thread on his own forum, Greenguy and Jim's resource, he announced earlier this week the establishment of Trusted Submitter Status. In short, as time has gone on links lists, TGPs and other traffic senders have had to make more and more rules and limitations. Greenguy wrote "We all know that, with link lists and free sites, one bad apple ruins the whole damn bunch. One counter loads some malware, we ban counters. One free host goes rogue and redirects some traffic, we ban all free hosts. I can go on and on ..." Instituting this new status level at Link O'Rama basically reverses an almost-decade's long trend of restrictions, opening the door to greater profitability for the adult freesite owner. Those names would be later handed to the Youth and Sport General Administration, according to the regulation, Milliyet said.

DNS Flaw Much Worse Than Previously Reported.

Security researcher Dan Kaminsky finally revealed the full details of his reported DNS flaw. It turns out it's a lot worse than previously understood."Every network is at risk," Kaminsky said at the Black Hat conference here Wednesday. "That's what this flaw has shown." Kaminsky disclosed the security vulnerability in the Domain Name System on July 13 but promised to withhold details of the bug for one month to give DNS server owners a chance to patch their systems. But a week ago, some of the details leaked after security firm Matasano inadvertently posted information about it online. That leak, though, only revealed the tip of an iceberg that Kaminsky describes as the worst internet security hole since 1997.

Border agents seize couple's laptop containing gay porn.

A lazy drive home from a weekend auto show turned into a stomach-churning experience at the Canada-US border for an Ottawa couple. "We didn't think there would be anything other than the normal questions, but there was," Rick says. "They went through our entire truck. They did not go through our toiletries, which we were surprised about, but they opened up the laptop, and I guess one of the icons said 'porn' on it." While the gay men watched, a CBSA agent sat in their truck and poked through the contents of the laptop. When he ran into locked material, he got the passwords from them. Rick and Shawn say that, in retrospect, it was a slapdash search. The laptop was combed, but not their cell phones, Shawn's Blackberry, or the loose burned CDs in the truck's glove compartment. The CBSA officers went into their office. Time ticked by as Rick and Shawn pondered what to do next. About an hour later, a CBSA officer came back with bad news. "He came back and said 'We're going to have to confiscate the laptop.' I asked why. He said it had 'questionable material,'" says Rick. The "questionable material" was gay porn. In particular, the CBSA officer pointed to a video that showed light watersports. The pair's video collection wasn't any more racy than the videos you can buy at porn shops in Canada, they say.

BT slams bandwidth brakes on all subscribers.

BT is throttling all of its broadband customers' bandwidth at peak times, not just heavy users, according to independent monitoring data.Early findings from a new hardware-based monitoring project by ISP analysis outfit Samknows show that even customers who use their connection lightly have non-port 80 traffic slowed to about 15 per cent of the normal speed in the evening, when load on BT's network is high. Port 80 is used for HTTP web traffic. Samknows used tests on other ports to simulate peer-to-peer traffic, so even a casual BT downloader who grabs a TV show from BitTorrent faces the throttle. Samknows boss Sam Crawford told El Reg: "Everyone knew that BT does traffic shaping. What's surprising is that they seem to do it to everyone." A BT spokesman confirmed Samknows' data. He said its throttling does apply to all customers, but emphasised it is only for peer-to-peer applications and does not affect streaming services such as BBC iPlayer.

McAfee slaps Trojan warning on MS Office Live.

McAfee has apologised after an anti-virus update released on Monday night incorrectly identified a plug-in for Microsoft Office Live Meeting as a Trojan. The signature update file mistakingly flagged LMCAPI.exe (a component of Live Update) as a Trojan called Swizzor. As a result the component was incorrectly deleted from thousands of desktops at one huge multinational, staffers from which informed us of the problem but requested anonymity. Techies at the firm had to roll out new versions of Live Update as well as an updated signature file that avoids the false alert. In a statement, McAfee said the snafu affected only a "small percentage" of its enterprise customers.

Net shoppers bullied into being Verified by Visa.

The Verified by Visa system may be marketed as an optional opt-in system for internet shoppers, but some banks are forcing users to enrol after only three attempts to avoid it.The unpleasant experiences of Verified by Visa refusenik and Reg reader Steve are likely to be faced by other cardholders, according to Andrew Goodwill, a director at card fraud prevention specialists The 3rd Man. The little-publicised mandatory use of Verified by Visa is down to how some banks apply the system, he explained. A spokesman for UK banking association APACS confirmed that more banks are making the scheme (and MasterCard's equivalent SecureCode service) mandatory."Most card issuers offer it. Some are making it mandatory but we don't keep a tally on what the banks are doing. This is a competitive offering so different banks are doing different things," he explained.

All Of 'Em Announces the Launch of WebmasterConventions.com

Having recently celebrated our eighth year anniversary, All Of 'Em, the adult webmaster resource covering the news, the events and the discussions in the adult online industry, proudly announces the addition of WebmasterConventions.com.

Rather than rebuild the wheel, WebmasterConventions.com leverages the power of Google Maps API as well as the 15 years of archival weather data via Wunderground to bring adult webmasters an all-in-one experience. Can you predict what the weather is going to be like in Amsterdam for three specific days in April? How about Curacao in October? At WebmasterConventions.com you have it at your finger tips, never pack for the wrong weather again.

The maps and search capabilities are unrivaled with our Global Convention Map powered by Google. Not only can you see a world view of convention locations, you can zoom down from a satellite view to your convention location city block by city block. What does a webmaster do if a hotel is booked? On Webmaster Conventions he clicks on the convention pin, types in "hotels" and gets back both a textual listing and visual map view of all the other hotels near the convention hotel. The webmaster can actually see how far away his second hotel pick is, then click it and either get the phone number or click through and register the hotel. If the convention is near you and you're driving, you can even get a planned route and mileage information.

"We have never just thrown something up for the sake of having it up. We wanted our conventions resource to have all the bells and whistles, all the power tools an adult webmaster requires. With the ability to accurately predict convention weather around the world at any time of the year, and included web search with a mapping interface, we've achieved our goal of creating something that is simple yet very powerful," said CEO Dravyk. "This keeps in line with All Of 'Em's long-time mission of delivering detailed information quickly with advanced search capabilities so webmasters can find what they're looking for fast and not waste their time."

Even when at the convention our new feature comes in handy. Want to make sure that taxi isn't ripping you off? Just tap your laptop or BlackBerry, click the convention pin then find out the best route from the airport to your hotel and ensure your cabbie is going the "right way". At the hotel, need to find a place to purchase that forgotten sunblock, or the nearest Indian restaurant, or where to spend a day's escape? Our map will give you details on what's where, how close it is to you, and all the other details you need right at your fingertips.

About All Of 'Em: The adult webmaster business resource that covers the adult online industry has many components to it. Is Your ISP Fouling Your 'Net Connection? Find Out.

Are you familiar with Robb Topolski? He's the guy who originally figured out Comcast was 'playing' with BitTorrent streams. Though scores of people were affected, it took a real propeller head geek to understand what was going on and blow the (Cap'n Crunch) whistle.¹. Robb will not be on the Comcast Christmas card list this year. As of today the Electronic Freedom Foundation has begun to democratize Robb's work. EFF calls it the Switzerland Network Testing Tool, named after the politically neutral nation of Switzerland. Though currently a command line tool (only the geekiest need apply), soon any halfwit with a PC will be able to see if his packets are fettered or unfettered. "Developed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Switzerland is an open source software tool for testing the integrity of data communications over networks, ISPs and firewalls. It will spot IP packets which are forged or modified between clients, inform you, and give you copies of the modified packets."

Fake Twitter Profile Links To Worm.

A fake profile on blogging site Twitter has a Flash Player link that installs a worm which can steal a user's personal data.First it was Facebook and MySpace, where messages from “friends” contained a link to install the latest Flash Player – which proved to be a worm that made the user’s computer part of a botnet. Now it’s micro-blogging site Twitter – which is the first time the site has been attacked. The BBC reports that security company Kaspersky Lab says a fake profile on Twitter purports to have a link to a porn video. Instead it loads a fake version of Flash that in fact contains programs capable of stealing personal data. Kaspersky also discovered the worms on Facebook and MySpace. The fake profile is in Portuguese with a name that translates to “pretty rabbit.” It exhorts people to click on the link and download Flash to view the video. The problem only affects PCs running Windows.

Russian gang hijacking PCs in vast scheme

A criminal gang is using software tools normally reserved for computer network administrators to infect thousands of PCs in corporate and government networks with programs that steal passwords and other information, a security researcher has found. The new form of attack indicates that little progress has been made in defusing the threat of botnets, networks of infected computers that criminals use to send spam, steal passwords, and do other forms of damage, according to computer security investigators. Several security experts say that although attacks against network administrators are not new, the systematic use of administrative software to spread malicious software has not been widely seen until now. The gang was identified publicly in May by Joe Stewart, director of malware research at SecureWorks, a computer security firm in Atlanta. Stewart, who has determined that the gang is based in Russia, was able to locate a central program controlling as many as 100,000 infected computers across the Internet. The program was running at a commercial Internet hosting computer center in Wisconsin.

Kacey Montoya in pornography scandals.

The news anchorwoman currently working for KOIN in Portland Oregon USA says her favorite things about the desert are the weather and the shopping, and the great win. But about her porn scandal, Montoya refutes strongly that she has been in porn. Montoya is facing a lawsuit that tags her as a woman involved in sexual and pornographic lewd affairs. The lawsuit was filed by Jeff Allan, a fired KOIN official. Allan a former director at KOIN alleges that he was forced to hire Montoya who had a history of sexual and pornographic involvement. The lawsuit claims or rather tags this as inappropriate modeling activities online. Montoya was born in Orange county California. She went to University of California. She was an intern at CNN who earned an Emmy award for her role in covering Gerald Ford funeral. This was for KPSP in Palm Springs California. Montoya said “I’m not a porn star. I was never a porn star… I never posed in any pictures with the intent that they would be put on an erotica site.” This was her defense to allegations of the porn modeling.

NYC Transit Plans Anti-Groping Campaign.

New York City is fighting back against subway passengers who can't keep their hands to themselves.People who get groped on crowded subway trains will be encouraged to report it as part of an anti-groping campaign being launched by New York City Transit next month. The agency expects to distribute 2,000 posters throughout the subway system that tell people who are sexually harassed on trains to report it to an employee or police officer. A study by Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer last year found 63 percent of women surveyed reported being sexually harassed while on subways and another 10 percent said they were sexually assaulted. "Women, in particular, need a strong and smart response from the MTA," Stringer said. Since the report came out, the MTA had considered various awareness campaigns. Meanwhile, posters stating, "Rob against me and I'll expose you," are decorating subway cars in Boston. Most women CBS 2 HD talked to said that when they are touched on the subway they feel helpless and do whatever they can to move away from the person touching them. "I don't know if there is much that can be done about it," straphanger Danielle Cheriff said. "It's sad but kind of true."

Online Reputation Management: The New PR.

Generally speaking, your reputation is created and altered by what you do and what everyone, including you, says. Unfortunately, perceptions are not always based on fact, but on opinion, conjecture and rumors. Look no farther than Michael Brown, former head of FEMA, who was lambasted for the lack of government response to Hurricane Katrina. Arguably the administration fall guy, Michael Brown spent months repairing his damaged reputation through tireless interviews and appearances. OnScreen Technologies, a manufacturer of LED display systems, recently took a chance on Michael Brown and hired him to help sell its RediAlert portable signage product. An avalanche of press coverage and online buzz has since erupted, which has necessitated an online reputation management (ORM) program.

Webcam hacker-ogler jailed for four years.

A middle-aged Cypriot has been jailed for four years after he was convicted of hacking into internet webcams in order to spy on teenage girls. The unnamed 47-year-old computer technician used Trojan horse spyware to gain remote control of a webcam and take illicit pictures of least one young woman in her bedroom. The teenager's machine became infected after she made the mistake of opening an infected email attachment. After obtaining photos of the 17-year-old the cyber-stalker attempted to blackmail her into posing naked in front of her webcam by threatening to email earlier images to her friends. The girl refused to comply, and instead contacted local police, who tracked down and cuffed her tormentor in 2005.

Microsoft to Give White Hats a Head Start on Patch Tuesdays

Microsoft will begin sharing technical details with security partners about vulnerabilities addressed in its monthly security updates, known as "Patch Tuesdays," the company announced Tuesday at the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas. The move, according to the company, was prompted by a growing but undesirable trend associated with Patch Tuesdays that has malicious code writers releasing exploits related to the updates sometimes within hours of the release. Releasing patches always indicates to hackers the location of vulnerable code, and they will inevitably use that to develop attacks against those who do not patch, said Richard Wang, U.S. manager at SophosLabs. The new Microsoft Active Protection Program (MAPP) is the company's attempt to stymie hackers before they can craft their malware by giving security software vendors an opportunity to get ahead of the game and provide updates to customers before any malicious code has been launched.

Dutch botnet herders arrested.

Dutch police have arrested two Dutch brothers suspected of running a botnet controlling 40,000 to 100,000 computers, with only a small portion (1,100 computers) based in the Netherlands. The FBI has been investigating this case for a while before contacting the Dutch authorities. The arrests were made shortly after the two young bot-herders from the Frisian town of Sneek sold their network of compromised machines to a person in Brazil for €25,000 on Tuesday. The 35-year-old Brazilian man from Taubate (near Rio de Janeiro) has also been arrested and is awaiting extradition to the US. The FBI hasn't revealed what the botnet was going to be used for, but Brazil along with Turkey and Russia hosts the highest number of zombies worldwide. Most botnets are exploited for denial-of-service attacks, click fraud, spamdexing and the theft of application serial numbers, login IDs, and financial information such as credit card numbers. The younger 16-year-old brother has been released awaiting futher trial while the main suspect, 19, had to appear before a judge in Rotterdam on Friday. In 2005 Dutch police arrested a trio of young men for creating a 1.5 million machine botnet, allegedly used to extort a US company and distribute spyware.

Which Search Engines Works Best? - A Pay Per Click Study.

Let’s face it, most people don’t track their advertising at all and therefore don’t know where their leads or sales are coming from. I’ve talked with dozens of business owners about which online advertising vehicles work best for them. What I usually hear is that they are impressed with the sites that give them the highest number of clicks. Sure, clicks are encouraging, but do they tell the whole story? No, the number of clicks or the cost per click (average CPC) does not tell the whole story. Not even close. At the end of the day, it’s not how much you spend per click that really counts – what’s important is how much you spend per conversion (a truly qualified prospect). And finally, of course, it’s the cost per sale that really matters. I have been doing pay per click campaigns for some time now. The following are my findings after testing pay-per-click campaigns from September 2006 through February 2007 on the following search engines: Google, Yahoo, MSN, Mamma, Lycos, 7Search and GoClick.

Vudu Fills Gaping Hole With AVN Porn Channel.

One thing you can say about the Vudu video wonderbox is that it gets better all the time. AVN—the Adult Video Network—is launching a dedicated porn channel on Vudu. One, Vudu's AVN channel will offer high-def porn—FyreTV is only DVD-quality, at best. (Merits of HD vs. SD porn aside, at least Vudu can deliver either HD if you want it.) Second, a Vudu box is way more discreet (though its remote does kind of look like a sex toy). And besides, if you already have Vudu, it's one less box you have to deal with.

Mac users urged to ditch Safari.

Surfers should steer clear of Safari until it introduces better anti-phishing protection, a US consumer rights magazine has advised. Consumer Reports lists "thinking your Mac shields you from all risks" as one of the seven biggest online blunders that expose surfers to risk online. It advises Apple fans to consider using either Firefox or Opera in preference to the Safari web browser bundled with Macs which contains no phishing protection, unlike the competition. It also suggests using free anti-phishing toolbars such as McAfee Site Advisor or FirePhish. "Mac users fall prey to phishing scams at about the same rate as Windows users, yet far fewer of them protect themselves with an anti-phishing toolbar. To make matters worse, the browser of choice for most Mac users, Apple’s Safari, has no phishing protection. We think it should," Consumer Reports said.

Porn Queen's NT visit to get tough on porn crime.

American Porn Queen Bobbi Starr has used a visit to the Northern Territory to try to toughen laws on illegal pornography. She has shown support for the sex industry lobby group, Eros, who have been fighting to introduce legislation that regulates pornography, similar to laws in the ACT. Eros has claimed illegal and violent pornography has been imported to Australia through NT GPO boxes. Ms Starr told the ABC: "If you have material with all that stuff coming and being distributed throughout the country and going into states where that is regulated (with specific laws to stop it), then that's really unfair to those that have set those laws." Starr, who was brought up in an evangelical Christian household, sees herself as a pro-sex feminist and told LIVENEWS that porn can be empowering for women.

Smaller ISPs at risk to DNS flaw.

Customers of small ISPs may be at risk of online fraud, following the industry's lax response to securing against the recently discovered Domain Name System (DNS) cache poisoning flaw. The flaw was publicly revealed early last month when security vendors including the Internet Systems Consortium (ISC), Cisco, Debian and Microsoft released patches after about six months of quiet collaboration. IOActive researcher Dan Kaminsky discovered the hole in January this year. Kaminsky alerted the US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) and multiple vendors to the flaw and all agreed to keep mum on the vulnerability until a fix was developed. The attack can be used as a vector to deliver a variety of payloads to the customers of ISPs with unpatched DNSs, ranging from financial fraud via phishing scams, to infection with malicious applications. Hackers can trick almost any DNS server into associating malicious IP addresses with legitimate domains.

The Billion-Dollar Domain Babies.

The latest ICANN plan to allow the global populace to assemble an entire domain name like www.yourname.yourname as their free choice is a revolutionary and timely decision. This now opens doors to cyber-brands like "my.ibm," "hotel.chicago," "it.jobs," "play.poker," "fly.usa" or "go.dell." Applicants will submit a non-refundable fee of US$100,000 to $500,000 for each name idea, and businesses are already jumping to get started. A new study estimates that this new registration process would create $33 billion in fees in the first three years. The prime beneficiary will be ICANN, which operates as a not-for-profit organization, but it still would have to deliver a highly structured, high-speed service and meet global needs. Other big recipients will be the worldwide domain registrars and highly specialized experts and lawyers, while the cascading revenues will go to IT and Web support organizations. The public at large will become the real beneficiaries, as a billion new users will come online, millions of new interactive gateways will open and thousands of new global brands will emerge.

Mozilla files landslide bug.

There are a lot of interesting bugs on Mozilla's bugzilla site. One of the most interesting I've ever seen is bug 446804 titled - "Can't get out of Whistler" It turns out Mozilla has a developer sumitt this week up in Whistler BC. The main road leading to Whistler was hit by a landslide the other day so developers are now stuck. What do developers do when there is a problem? They file a bug report of course. As of this posting there some 97 comments attached to this bug ranging from the humorous to the practical.

Press Releases and Search Engine Optimization.

Many companies still don't take advantage of SEO. There are many, however, that issue press releases on a regular basis. What they don't understand is that press releases can be part of your SEO efforts, and can be used to gain presence in the editorial results of the search engines, even if it's not a direct presence for your actual domain. Press releases, in the traditional sense, were meant to reach out to journalists with the hope that a publication would pick it up, call someone within your company for comment, and gain a presence within the traditional media community (television, radio and/or print) to enhance your image and further your business. Press releases in the digital media environment can do all of that, plus a bunch of other cool stuff. Even though many continue to issue press releases, few have made adjustments to their efforts to include press release optimization for the digital community and to further their interactive marketing -- and specifically SEO -- efforts.

Web Application Security: Don't Bolt It On; Build It In.

In light of breaches in Web application security worldwide, the importance of catching potential areas for intrusion is necessary at the beginning. Performing application vulnerability testing during production (and not after a breach has been detected) can save a company thousands of dollars. The only way to ensure the highest level of security is to build it in from the outset. How secure are your Web applications? Unless you conduct application vulnerability testing throughout the lifespan of your applications, there's no way for you to know about your web application security. That's not good news for your security or regulatory compliance efforts.Companies make significant investments to develop high-performance Web applications so customers can do business whenever and wherever they choose. While convenient, this 24-7 access also invites criminal hackers who seek a potential windfall by exploiting those very same highly available corporate applications.

The Veronicas Find Porn Is Good Publicity.

What is with the new “porn` scandal in the world of the Veronicas. For starters, photos of Jess from the Veronicas posted at fleshbot.com where just topless photos not porn pictures. The Veronicas sex scandal has kept the Murdoch press from having to publish empty pages over the last week, but is this thing a beat up' It sure looks that way. The Veronicas are about to release their album Hook Me Up in the US and any publicity is good publicity. Calling the four shots published by Fleshbot porn is ridiculous. They are simply topless shots of Jess Origliasso. But hey, lets not let the truth get in the way of a good story, especially when the Murdoch press is concerned. Putting a pop star and the word porn into a headline attracts readers like flies. Let`s be honest. This kind of publicity is the best thing that can happen for the Veronicas, especially with an impending US release.

Sri Lanka to charge special fee for internet porn: report

Sri Lanka has ordered internet firms to filter pornographic content, but adults could buy unrestricted access for special fee with password protection, a media report said. Sri Lanka has ordered internet firms to filter pornographic content, but adults could buy unrestricted access for special fee with password protection, a media report said. The Sunday Island newspaper quoting a Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) statement said President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered filtering sexually explicit content to protect children. Proxy servers allow surfers to 'tunnel' though filters placed by internet companies. The Sunday Island quoted the telecom watchdog statement as saying that "there has been increasing concern about the exposure of children to the obscene and pornographic materials via the Internet." "If an adult wishes to have unrestricted access to the Internet, service maybe obtained from an Internet Service Provider in password protected manner making a payment," the newspapes said. "However, the user is responsible for use of the service in proper manner and should ensure that the filtered websites are not accessible to the children." The newspaper did not say whether the fee would go to the internet service provider or the government. In Sri Lanka pornography is not legal, and especially those found selling pornographic or 'obscene' material are sometimes prosecuted.

Google's Sergey Brin on Local Mobile Search.

Let's be clear right off the bat. 2008 is NOT the Year of Mobile Search. Or the Year of Local Mobile Search. We've seen those proclamations since O'Reilly proclaimed "2005 is Year of Local Mobile Search" in an article by Nathan Torkington. But with the launch more advanced mobile devices like the iPhone 3G, Google, at least, views 2008 as a key year in their battle to win mobile search. Google anticipates search volume will increase as the iPhone and other sophisticated devices with powerful browsers encourage mobile search. On the Q2 2008 Google earnings call, Sergey Brin said that he expected to see an "uptick" in search volume due to mobile. He pointed out that people are not always at their desktops, but always want to know something.

Checklist for Reviving a Dead Computer.

It's not something we like to think about but your computer will fail, if you keep it long enough. It may be a simple problem, such as the floppy drive not reading the disk to a major system crash. Because computers are run by operators,User Error is the most common cause of computer malfunction. When the user is at the computer,he or she may add or delete certain files.Or he/she may remove or exchange certain hardware features. When we look at user error,we must remember that since we're human, the user error may be easy to solve by simply asking the last user if he/she installed any software,re-configured any software or hardware settings, etc. A large percentage of computer malfunctions are due to environmental factors such as power surges caused by lightning, resulting in overvoltage. Another cause for failure may be room temperature being too high or low,as well as dust, dirt,or sunlight.

Millions of people develop internet addiction against their own will.

Internet becomes the space, where many people all over the world tend to spend more and more of their time. Internet dependence negatively affects the normal life of a human being and inevitably leads to severe stresses for those who become addicted to the Internet and those who regularly communicate with web-maniacs. Web addiction has already turned into a serious psychological problem for a huge number of people worldwide. Dr. Kimberly Young, the author of “Caught in the Net: How to Recognize the Signs of Internet Addiction—and a Winning Strategy for Recovery” says that up to ten percent of Americans (from 15 to 30 million people) have become victims of Internet addiction disorder. Web-mania progresses speedily in such countries as China, South Korea and Taiwan, where Internet-surfing is more popular than in the United States. The net has caught from 18 to 30 percent of population in those countries. The symptoms of Internet addiction disorder may include: cybersex, online love affairs, porn-viewing and excessive gaming, of course.

Lawmakers Demand Information on Web Tracking Practices.

A congressional committee wants the nation's largest telecommunications and Internet companies to explain whether they target online advertising based on consumers' search queries and Web surfing habits. In an expanding inquiry into the state of consumer privacy on the Internet, House Energy and Commerce Committee leaders sent letters Friday to more than 30 companies, demanding to know whether they track where their users go online and use that information to deliver personalized advertising. Among the companies receiving the letters were Google Inc., Yahoo Inc., Microsoft Corp., AT&T Inc., Comcast Corp., Qwest Communications International Inc., Verizon Communications Inc., Time Warner Inc.'s AOL unit and Time Warner Cable Inc. The companies were given a week to respond. The letters build on an earlier probe by the committee into ''deep packet inspection'' technologies, which can track where people go and what they do on the Internet. The committee already has been investigating Embarq Corp., an Internet service provider based in Overland Park, Kan., that has been testing technology to track the online behavior of its customers and then serve up targeted ads based on their presumed interests. And both the House and Senate Commerce Committees have been looking into a small Silicon Valley startup called NebuAd Inc., which developed personalized-ad technology that Embarq and other Internet service providers have used. But the latest letters broaden the inquiry to encompass much bigger and better-known players on the Internet. The letters seek details on how many consumers have been tracked, whether those people have been notified and whether they were given the option to ''opt out'' of it. The committee also wants to know how the collected information is used and how it is gathered -- for example, whether the companies aggregate data from different online applications.

Porn Industry Learns from RIAA Tactics, Targets Web Sites Instead.

Pornographers band together under The PAK Group to take on smut pirates. Apparently fed up with the lack of progress and high expense of attacking individual file sharers, porn industry leader Jason Tucker announced that his anti-piracy organization, The PAK Group, is going to start litigating websites that offer stolen porn instead. The PAK Group was founded in September 2007 by a coalition of producers angry with the spread of piracy online. It originally set out to attack individual file-sharers online, much like the RIAA.Tucker’s new target refers largely to the deluge of “tube” websites that have sprung up in the past few years: styled after the ever-so-popular YouTube, there are now hundreds of these sites offering free streaming video complete with search engines, indexed content, tagging, and in some cases even a download option. Much of their content, however, is pirated.

Girls Gone Wild and Joe Francis Are Vindicated AGAIN.

On the heels of Ashley Dupre's attempt at baselessly suing Girls Gone Wild founder Joe Francis and later dropping the lawsuit without receiving any money, an Alabama woman has also dropped her own frivolous lawsuit against Francis and Girls Gone Wild without getting a dime. Brittany Pitts dismissed her lawsuit today in a move that vindicated Joe Francis and Girls Gone Wild (GGW) from false allegations. Pitts had claimed in her lawsuit that she did not consent to any use of her likeness or image in Girls Gone Wild. The GGW video clearly showed Pitts consenting to the filming. The video also shows Pitts friends verifying to a GGW camera operator their ages as 18 years old and fully consenting on camera to the GGW filming. Pitts filed her lawsuit in Panama City, Florida, in the same court, in front of the same "Settle or Jail" judge who put Girls Gone Wild CEO Joe Francis in jail for 11 months when Francis refused to settle a civil lawsuit brought by the judge's ex-law partner. Pitts sued Joe Francis personally, even though Mr. Francis was not even in the state of Florida when the filming took place. The video of Pitts appearance in GGW clearly disproved her allegations.

Homeland Security: We can seize laptops for an indefinite period.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has concocted a remarkable new policy: It reserves the right to seize for an indefinite period of time laptops taken across the border. A pair of DHS policies from last month say that customs agents can routinely--as a matter of course--seize, make copies of, and "analyze the information transported by any individual attempting to enter, re-enter, depart, pass through, or reside in the United States." (See policy No. 1 and No. 2.) DHS claims the border search of electronic information is useful to detect terrorists, drug smugglers, and people violating "copyright or trademark laws." (Readers: Are you sure your iPod and laptop have absolutely no illicitly downloaded songs? You might be guilty of a felony.) This is a disturbing new policy, and should convince anyone taking a laptop across a border to use encryption to thwart DHS snoops. Encrypt your laptop, with full disk encryption if possible, and power it down before you go through customs.

Apple DNS patch doesn't patch Mac clients.

Apple was widely skewered for being among the last to fix a gaping security hole in the net's address lookup system that could allow the wholesale hijacking of users' internet connections. And now that the company has finally got around to issuing a patch, there's just one problem: it doesn't work on client versions of Mac OS X. That's the vast majority of Mac installations.Researchers from security firm nCircle and the SANS Institute both report that fully patched versions of Tiger (10.4.11) and Leopard (10.5.4) remain vulnerable even after running a bevy of patches Apple released Thursday. Other vendors, including Microsoft, Sun Micro, released similar patches weeks ago. Both researchers found that OS X clients fail to adequately randomize DNS source ports, allowing attackers to poison the caches of DNS servers that run on the operating system.

John Boehner said the FCC would be "essentially regulating the internet."In a letter Thursday to FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, the Ohio congressman said that the government should stay out of the net neutrality debate and let the free market work it out. He indirectly noted how Comcast is already working with the private sector to "find better ways to manage traffic."

Worms spread via spam on Facebook and MySpace.

Miscreants have created a pair of worms targeting MySpace and Facebook users. Two variants of a new worm - dubbed Koobface - are the first to use social engineering sites to press-gang infected machines into botnets, warns net security firm Kaspersky Lab. When a user with an infected machine accesses his MySpace account the Koobface-A variant posts links to a malicious website in the commentaries of friends' accounts. Koobface-B, which targets Facebook users, sends spam messages to an infected users' friends through the social networking site. The text of these messages includes "Paris Hilton Tosses Dwarf On The Street" and "Hello; You must see it!!! LOL. My friend catched you on hidden cam", among others. Prospective marks are invited to click on a link that takes them to a booby-trapped site purporting to contain a video clip. Users are prompted to download the "latest version of Flash Player", but in fact are offered a file called codesetup.exe that carries the payload for the Koobface network worm.
